Reddit Cracks Down on Dark Web Subreddits

If you read DeepDotWeb or VICE at all, you may have come across the story Reddit Just Banned /R/DarkNetMarkets, or Reddit Bans Subreddits Dedicated to Dark Web Drug Markets and Selling Guns. If so, then you already know what I’m talking about.

In addition to banning that subreddit, it also banned several other related subreddits, such as /r/deepwebexperiences, which, in theory, was a “fiction-based sub.” As on the darknet markets subreddit, their reasoning was that the sub violated their “policy against transactions involving prohibited goods or services.”

It may have been inevitable that such a thing would happen, given that many darknet markets have seen their demise in recent years (AlphaBay and Hansa Market come to mind).

Of course, I know from experience that this isn’t going to stop the users and vendors from finding a public place to have conversations. Through the grapevine, I’ve heard that many of them migrated to Voat, which uses a very similar format to Reddit (subs, upvotes and downvotes, etc.).

Look, I’m not saying I necessarily have an opinion one way or the other, but I figure that just because you censor something, that doesn’t mean it will go away. Reddit, however, is a large site with many users, and they may have been put under pressure to ban subreddits like the ones above.

There is a Reddit onion site as well, although I’m sure the same content policies apply on their darknet site. Its URL is http://redditmoongroogs.onion, which, I must say, is an awesome name. I assume this is the real Reddit and not a clone site, though I don’t have definitive proof. (It’s bad to make assumptions with Tor, isn’t it?)

Anyhow, I hope that I won’t get caught up the Reddit anti-dark web shitstorm, but it looks like I’m OK for now.

Unless I start trying to sell Singapore, of course.
