There’s a forum called Mystery Archive that looked interesting recently, as it deals with the types of puzzles, mysteries, and ARGs that come up here on occasion. One of the sites mentioned on it is called fUSION Anomaly, and definitely has to be one of the stranger sites in existence today.
fUSION Anomaly, at first glance, appears to be a Wikipedia of things like paranormal oddities, unsolved mysteries, and alternative medicine. It’s far more bizarre-looking than Wikipedia, though. The OP on the forum described it as such:
This is a strange website that has been around for a number of years. I first remember running across it around 15 years ago, then later on I found this Mary Sue article about it and got lost in the rabbit hole once again. Basically it’s like a weird personal wiki site where all the articles are seemingly written by one guy, are about odd topics, and iirc, sometimes contain strange inaccurate information.
I’ve never understood the purpose of this site or why it has stayed up for so long. It’s been bugging me for years. I’d be curious to see if anyone here could come up with any kind of explanation other than “weird art project,” which is all I’ve been able to think for a long time.
One poster pointed out that fUSION Anomaly may be connected to the band Brand New, because their old site, fightoffyourdemons.com, which is archived on the Wayback Machine, linked to the former. While that initially seemed unlikely, the band is known for doing mysteries and ARG-like games to promote their albums, so that could be the answer.
The “encyclopedia” contains entries for words like “nexus,” “time,” and “vortex,” and like Wikipedia, has different portals for various concepts like “flavors,” “thoughts,” and “words.” For example, under the node “Aesthetic,” it states:
Aesthetics, or esthetics (/ɛsˈθɛtɪks, iːs-, æs-/), is a branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of beauty and taste, as well as the philosophy of art (its own area of philosophy that comes out of aesthetics). It examines subjective and sensori-emotional values, or sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste.
Aesthetics covers both natural and artificial sources of aesthetic experience and judgment. It considers what happens in our minds when we engage with aesthetic objects or environments such as in viewing visual art, listening to music, reading poetry, experiencing a play, exploring nature, and so on. The philosophy of art specifically studies how artists imagine, create, and perform works of art, as well as how people use, enjoy, and criticize their art. It deals with how one feels about art in general, why they like some works of art and not others, and how art can affect our moods or even our beliefs. Both aesthetics generally and philosophy of art especially ask questions like “what is art?”, “what is a work of art?”, and “what makes good art?”.
Some people on the forum have dug deeper into this site and its background. Even if it’s not related to the band, maybe they’re just interested in that sort of thing and wanted to share it on their fan page.
In some ways, the site is reminiscent of Amazein at www.973-eht-namuh-973.com, in that both deal with abstract concepts and philosophy, and have a mazelike structure.
So, what are your thoughts? Is it really just an encyclopedia of philosophy and abstract ideas, or the ramblings of someone who’s into conspiracy theories?
